The Take-Care (of yourself) Clinic

Cold is still hanging on so this morning Mom persuades me to go to the Take-Care Clinic at Walgreen's ( there is little or no waiting and a Nurse Practitioner checks you out) thinking it would be a quick and easy way to determine what's wrong with me and get me on my way. After a week of sniffling and coughing, I thought this sounded like a fab idea. My neighbor went a couple of months ago when she had a sinus infection and was impressed by the efficiency. My neighbor did not have Evelyn. Now Evelyn was a very nice lady but being nice doesn't necessarily mean you are good at your job. I go in and Evelyn proceeds to ask me lots of questions about my symptoms and my health history. After I answered all the questions Evelyn proceeds to vacillate about what my condition could possibly be..."Well it could be allergies or it could be that it started with allergies and now it's a sinus infection..." then she tells me that "the only way to actually determine if you have a sinus infection is to do a CT scan and you know, those are expensive." Really Evelyn? Because my regular doctor has previously diagnosed me with a sinus infection without the aid of a CT scan. When I told her I was taking Mucinex, she says "but that doesn't have an antihistimine does it?" I don't know Evelyn, isn't that more your territory? To top it all off, she writes me 3 (count 'em 3) prescriptions. One for an antibiotic, should I have the indeterminable sinus infection, one for allergy nose spray and one for Zyrtec-D. I feel like I should put them all up on the wall and throw a dart, see what I hit. I left feeling so silly--like I was supposed to have the answers for this lady instead of the other way around. So much for my shortcut--next time I'll make an appointment with my internist.

xoxo,
EHK

I know you feel bad and I would never laugh at your illness, however, I can just picture nurse E saying, now step right over here beside the toilet paper and we can administer the CT scan today. Stand by the charmen, that is softer. I guess those places are hit or miss. I do hope you are feeling better soon.

Any time I've had a sinus infection I normally wind up with multiple prescriptions from my doctor, because they are normally horrible by the time I "find the time" to go get checked out.

I normally get some steroid prescription, antibiotic and a nose spray, so you might be fine with all three.

Yikes, that is kind of scary! Good thing you are semi-skeptical. I feel like a lot of people would go in and take her seriously!

I just stopped by your blog!

And I've been to those clinics twice in my area, both times for sinus infections, and was given the same medications, and the silly run-around questioning. They must all be trained the same.
